The Story so Far

It started with a thread...

I didn't grow up making lace. I'm not a master lacemaker, nor do I have generations of lace-making knowledge behind me.

I'm a beginner.

But somewhere between picking up those pegs, making a pillow from a kitchen towel, and discovering the extraordinary history behind lace, I became completely captivated.

I began wondering where the patterns came from, who made them, how the techniques travelled from one place to another, and why a craft once found in so many homes is now in danger of disappearing.

And so Merletto Cottage began.

Why Merletto?

Merletto is the Italian word for lace.

I chose it because my own interest in lace sits between two traditions — the English lace-making heritage I'm learning about and an Italian family connection that has made the name particularly meaningful to me.

Merletto Cottage is my little meeting place between the two.
